1. She wants to see how well you adapt.

A lot of women who come from black communities know that some of her friends and family members will not readily accept you in the beginning. That's a harsh reality you can't ignore.

This is usually a temporary condition; as you build trust people will forget about what race you are.

However, she will want to be sure that you will not make her look bad. For example, if she knows her siblings will make fun of you, she wants to be sure you know how to take a joke.

There are also some cultural difference, so a black girl will expect you to be comfortable enough with yourself to get used to them.

2. Don't make race a concern.

This may seem obvious but ignoring it can lead to her getting offended. If she feels you are over-sensitive to her skin colour you won't get very far.

At the end of the day she a woman just like any other. You don't need to try anything different from who you already are.

In the same vein, don't make racist jokes either - that would be taking things too far.

Instead focus on getting to know her as a person. With time she will open up to you. You will then be more able to see where the boundaries concerning skin colour are.

The bottom line is, don't try to fit her into a stereotype.

3. Compliment her hair!

There is one thing black women really care about - their hair. They spend a lot of time and money on it so she will really appreciate it when you tell her how much you like it.

Don't ever ask her if it's real! It's very common for black women to change their hair every other week. You shouldn't make a big a deal out of it - just enjoy the variety.

Some women may not be really comfortable with you touching their hair. This has nothing to do with how she feels about you. She may just be a bit self-conscious.
